„Plant Biology is green science”

The usefulness and applicability of plant research to solve (1) global problems of changing climate, (2) diminishing food supply and biodiversity, and (3) reducing environmental contamination is obvious for plant biologists. However, it is need to be communicated to the society. Honest assessment of the various measures is a must. These are the main reasons why the organizers of Plant Biology Europe 2025 decided to focus on the timely and urgent topic: how plant science can contribute to provide green science for the society in order to compete out greenwashing. In the last decades, bad science, sometimes even pseudoscience has spoiled natural sciences. Plant biotechnology is not an exception to it. Weak, questionable, or misinterpreted results are utilized in biotechnology, agroindustry for „greenwashing” purposes and are continuously spreading. In the meantime, strong society pressure also forces us, the scientists to demonstrate the usefulness of their own research.

Authentic Environmental Solutions

Green science is rooted in rigorous research and innovation aimed at solving environmental problems. It encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, waste reduction technologies etc. By focusing on scientifically validated methods and results, green science including plant biology, produces tangible results that contribute positively to the environment. In contrast, greenwashing undermines these efforts by promoting superficial or misleading claims about a company's environmental practices. This dissonance not only fails to address the underlying environmental issues but can also hinder progress by creating confusion among consumers about what constitutes genuine sustainability. In this way, greenwashing dilutes the impact of real green sciences efforts and makes it more challenging for consumers to make informed choices.

Building Trust and Accountability

When companies invest in green science, they often engage in transparent practices that allow for third-party validation of their claims. This transparency builds credibility and trust with consumers, who are increasingly seeking out businesses that demonstrate a genuine commitment to sustainability. Being committed researchers, we should not allow attempts which try to replace green sciences with superficial trust eroding greenwashing. This backlash can extend beyond individual companies, creating scepticism toward all natural sciences and molecular plant biology is particularly at risk.

Long-Term Ecological Sustainability

Green sciences are not just about immediate benefits; they also lay the groundwork for long- term ecological sustainability. By prioritizing plant biology research in areas such as biodegradable materials, carbon capture technologies, and regenerative agriculture, we may aim to create solutions that are not only effective but also enduring. These innovations can help mitigate climate change, preserve biodiversity, and reduce reliance on finite resources, ensuring a healthier planet for future generations.

For the Future

Plant biology as green science must represent a committed and authentic approach to addressing environmental challenges through rigorous research and sustainable practices. As society continues to grapple with pressing environmental issues, the choice between embracing green science or succumbing to greenwashing will have profound implications for the future of our planet. To create a sustainable future, we must prioritize transparency, accountability, and genuine environmental stewardship over mere marketing tactics. Only through the authentic efforts of natural sciences can we hope to achieve lasting change and a healthier world.

Plant biology serves as a foundational element of green sciences by providing innovative solutions to a range of environmental challenges. From carbon sequestration and sustainable agriculture to bioremediation and renewable energy, the applications of plant biology are vast and vital. By harnessing the power of plants, we can create a more sustainable and resilient future for our planet. Our field may contribute to many issues, including but not limited to 1) Carbon Sequestration, 2) Sustainable Agriculture, 3) Bioremediation, 4) Biofuels and Renewable Energy, 5) Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, 6) Agroecology and Permaculture, 7) Plant-Based Alternatives, 8) Climate Resilience.

We, the organizers are deeply convinced about the importance of our science and the above goals are relevant to many topics of the congress, however it must be demonstrated to the society and our meeting can be a good occasion for that.
