Getting Around Budapest

Budapest boasts a well-developed public transportation system, making it one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to explore the city. Whether you're zipping around on trams, buses, or the iconic metro, getting from A to B in Budapest is not only convenient but also part of the adventure! Plus, opting for public transport helps minimize your carbon footprint, making your journey more environmentally friendly.

Pro Tips for Your Journey
Purchasing a ticket isn’t enough, you must validate it before starting your journey. On the metro, validation happens before entering the station, while on street-level vehicles, tickets need to be validated as soon as you board, before departure. Ticket validation can be done via stamping or punching machines (except for certain services like boat or ferry). For digital tickets, validation rules are available in the BudapestGO app or on the mobile ticket FAQs.
Timetables for all routes and services are available on the BKK website or in the BudapestGO app, where you can also plan your journey in real-time.
Budapest offers night bus services, ensuring safe and reliable transport even after midnight. These buses are frequent and cover most major routes, allowing easy access to key locations across the city.
For tourists, tram line 2 offers stunning views along the Danube on the Pest side, passing by key landmarks such as the Parliament and the Great Market Hall. Tram 41 on the Buda side takes you past famous thermal baths and the Várkert Bazár. For those heading to Buda Castle, bus 16 is an ideal option from the city center. The historic Metro Line 1, Europe’s first underground railway, runs by must-see sites like the Opera House, Heroes’ Square, and Széchenyi Thermal Bath.
Tram 2 gives you spectacular views along the Danube, including the Parliament and Holocaust Memorial. Tram 41 highlights Buda’s thermal baths, while bus 16 connects you with Buda Castle via the iconic Chain Bridge. Metro Line 1 provides access to Budapest's oldest landmarks, and for a unique experience, try the cogwheel railway up to Széchenyi Hill or the scenic Chairlift to János Hill, Budapest’s highest point.
